Scrybe marking Outlook off your Task List?!

Filed under: Business, Internet, Technology — J Green @ 11:27 am

Wow, just watched a couple videos of an upcoming web-based organizer – Scrybe. First of all, if you use (or should use!) ANY type of organizer – paper or electronic – you need to check this out! I’d try to describe it, but you really are better off just watching the video. If you go the site, there’s currently a similar demo video there too. I just signed up to be notified of the beta testing period. One parting thought, combine this with Google’s Gmail and their Docs and Spreadsheets, and you’ve got quite a competitive alternative for the average users to Microsoft’s Office!!

Coming Zune and Coming Soon?!

Filed under: Entertainment, News, Technology — J Green @ 8:16 am

Microsoft Z

unesWell, it’s been many moons since my last post…sorry! Not much time to write this post, but we’ll see how much I can squeeze in!

So what does it take to kill Apple’s monopolistic hold on the portable audio/video market? Well, maybe another company that knows a thing or two about monopolistic market domination!! Coming to store shelves everywhere in about a month is Microsoft’s Zune. I could go on and on about all the details you may, but probably DON’T, want to know, but instead, why not just read up on it here and/or browse the articles here!! And if you’ve got a spare $250 sittin’ in your wallet around November 14th, you can get first-hand experience. Also, not a bad idea to pick up as Christmas gift for this post’s author!!! Speaking of gifts, my gift idea for Spellecy is now on sale for $16.49…a great idea for any avid DVD viewers out there!!

Video iPod Mock-upOf course, for all you Apple fans and sufferers of Microsoft-phobia, the rumor mill is hitting a feverish pace with new, old, and recycled tidbits about a TRUE video iPod…as opposed to an iPod with video (that’d be the current ones for anyone new to this rumor!). This image is a verified and honest-to-goodness image of the Video iPod…as interpreted by some artist probably having no connections whatsoever to Apple other than his purchasing history!! Anyways, it pretty much codifies all the rumors into a visual depiction: full widescreen display, on-screen controls, and Apple’s rounded-corner goodness! Again, with so many places to catch up on this rumor, I’ll just point you towards one of my favorite sites for reading up on it…which would be here!

Writely Invites!

Filed under: Important Links, Internet, News, Technology — J Green @ 8:12 am

Hey, I mentioned Writely in a previous post…and I’ve now managed to get into the Beta testing group. Haven’t had more than 2 minutes to look at it yet, but if you have been waiting for Writely or if you go read about it and decide you’d like to check it out, let me know and I’ll send you an invite. You can read all about Writely here. To ask for an invite, leave a comment with your e-mail address…but a word of caution, type ” AT ” (with spaces on both sides) instead of using the “@” character so that it can’t be picked up if the comments are ever crawled.

Walkin’ The Hy-wire

Filed under: Automotive, Entertainment, Technology — J Green @ 12:37 pm

Here’s another video for your enjoyment. Don’t worry, other than having a car that I’d love own, there’s no similarity to the previous post!! Given the reference to the RX-8 (okay, I guess the video has TWO cars I’d love to own!), the video is obviously not new, but the GM Hy-wire is a pretty sweet (working) concept! Not only that, but if you like cars at all, Top Gear is a great show from our friends across the Atlantic. Apparently, TG is working on an American-ized version for Discovery Channel. I first DISCOVERED (Get it?! Sorry…cheap pun!!) TG from the episodes shown on Discovery Channel. Of course, there are ways of watching the current UK episodes…but I’ll save that for another post!

One last side-track before movie time! Since we’re on the subject of cars, does your patriotic spirit urge you to buy American-made? If so, and if you’re in the market for a new car, the top America-made car you can buy is the Toyota Camry! If you extend that out to trucks, the king of the automotive hill is the Ford F-Series, but I’d recommend (since it’s not MY wallet!) the Saleen S331 Sport Truck. Basically, it’s an F-150 on steroids, HGH, and any other performance-enhancing substances available…except entirely legal!!!

Alrighty then…on with the show!

Finally, a Bluetooth headset that doesn’t look dorky

Filed under: Technology — rspellecy @ 10:59 am

Motorola Miniblue H5So…Motorola has finally developed a bluetooth headset that doesn't make you look like a cyborg. They avoid the boom mike problem by, well, getting rid of it! Instead of acquiring sound from a boom mike, this new headset obtains vibrations from your jawbone. The big question then is whether or not sound quality will suffer as a result…but I might be willing to put up with that to not look that "that guy." Here's a link to the product description on Motorola's website.

Free Software – Not Always Bad & Crappy

Filed under: Internet, Technology — J Green @ 9:26 pm

As a word of caution, free software is USUALLY bad and/or crappy…but not always! I found this site listing “the best free and open-source software for Windows“. I currently use or have used many of the products on their list: Firefox (Web Browser), VLC (Media Player), OpenOffice (think M$ Office…without all the $$$), Audacity (Sound Editor), Gimp.app (image editor), and Paint.net (another image editor).

So that got me thinking about the other free programs I use. First of all, SourceForge is a great site that hosts a ton of free programs, but the projects range from abandoned to the idea stage to non-functional to crappy to okay to good to excellent…so explore at your own risk! Also, before I get to MY list, I do hafta acknowledge a good, free product from Microsoft – Windows Defender. If you read any of the articles listed in my blog entry for Vista, you may remember this being mentioned as a standard component of the new OS.

So here’s my addendum to the products listed above:

Well, just a few notes to finish this longest-post-yet. I guess I could’ve listed iTunes, but if you don’t know about that, I doubt you’d be here reading this blog! What you may not already know is that Writely is an online word processor which was recently bought by Google…hopefully it’ll stay as free and cool as it was before the purchase!

Gadgets In The Key Of “C”

Filed under: Music, Technology — J Green @ 8:14 pm

Tronical KnobEver on the search for ways to do less faster and better, I stumbled across a link to this site. This company – Tronical – has developed a kit that, when installed on a compatible guitar, will automatically tune the guitar in less than two seconds! Oh yeah, this isn’t limited to standard pitch (440Hz) or tuning (E-A-D-G-B-E)…so you can either get your axe back into tune after thrashing on it or change into an entirely different tuning and/or pitch. I do, however, see two drawbacks.

 1. No price listed…or in other words, go ahead and guess that this’ll be ‘spensive!
 2. It’s not gonna make you sound any better! When you hit the wrong note notes, they may be in tune, but they’re still not gonna sound good!

Update: Reading an article at Sonic State, Tronical plans to release this with an MSRP below $1k. Also, if you go to the Synthax site (the distributor for Tronical), you can find some additional of the same information about this product.

Microsoft’s New View On Life

Filed under: Internet, Technology — J Green @ 12:23 pm

Windows VistaSo, think you’ve mastered Windows yet…or at least close enough?! Good, ‘cuz Microsoft is unleashing a new view Vista for your computer! In addition to the information on Microsoft’s Windows Vista Homepage, GameSpot has a good article on some of Vista’s features and Blue Blog has a video showing showing Vista’s voice recognition feature.
